Encouraging Independence, the Montessori Way

Encouraging Independence, the Montessori Way

As a parent, it can be difficult to consistently encourage independence in your child. After all, it’s simpler and easier to just dress them yourself instead of waiting for your child to do it. It can take ages! If you’re in a hurry, it isn’t really something you want to entertain.

However, habitually doing things for them when they’re perfectly capable will make them lose their independence and their self-confidence. That’s why it’s very important to encourage independence early on.

One of the best ways you can foster independence is by adapting what a Montessori Learning Center in Orange, California does. In a Montessori setting, children are given the freedom to make creative choices, while a teacher provides guidance. In the same way, you can foster independence by creating a safe setting where they can make their own decisions, with you acting as a guide and support.

To make this easier, take note of the things that your child is capable of doing. Children who are ready to enter Kindergarten or pre-school are capable of a lot more things than you think. Ask them if they feel like they can brush their teeth or store their toys away on their own. By asking them, not only are you showing that you respect their decision, but you’re also increasing their willingness to try things. Just remember to praise them accordingly and show them that making mistakes is okay.
