Montessori Multi-age Classrooms: What are the Benefits?

Montessori Multi-age Classrooms: What are the Benefits?

One of the key distinctions in being a Montessori Learning Center in Orange, California is our multi-age classroom. This means that children learn together with other children who are younger or older than them. It is interesting to note that the earlier format of teaching is also multi-age. However, in the present traditional classroom, children are now grouped according to age. That is, except the Montessori classroom.

So, should you immerse your child in a multi-age classroom found in a Montessori curriculum? Here are the reasons you should.

  • Individual Learning
Inside a multi-age classroom, children are provided with lessons that are not age-specific. Instead, tots can explore their classroom and engage with different activities that are deemed essential for their learning, growth, and development as a child. They are given the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace. As a result of this, children develop confidence and love for learning because they are not forced about a particular lesson.
  • Nurtures Trust and Friendship
When they are constantly exposed to children older or younger than them, they learn to develop trust with others. They learn the essence of family. Even if the other child is younger than them, they will learn to give and accept friendship. In our Montessori-based Child Care Service in Garden Grove, California, we know that these values are essential when a child grows up. If they can learn these values early on, then they can be prepared for the challenges ahead in life.
  • Monitored Learning
The teachers in a multi-age classroom are also trained to focus on a child’s individual needs. Because the classroom is also geared to meet the standard child-teacher ratio, you can trust that teachers can have enough time to monitor your child’s learning progress. With this adequate monitoring, children see that learning is possible regardless of your age-determined program.
  • Focused on Abilities
Because the environment caters to children of different ages, there is expected flexibility of their learning. Their abilities as a child will be given considerably more than their passing grade. Our Montessori educators know that some children learn faster than other children. Yet, we also recognize that the quality of learning is not on grades but on the children’s ability to adapt and make their way in life.
  • Social Skills
Children also get to work on their social skills inside the multi-age classroom. They learn that interacting with older children should be done with respect. At the same time, older children learn that interacting with the younger ones puts them at higher responsibility. Isn’t this what we want them to learn growing up?
